Background:

St. Matia Mulumba Primary School is situated in the Kamuli District of Uganda about 140 km north-east of the capital city, Kampala. The school was started in 1999 and serves over 550 children between the ages of 4 and 13. Many of the students are from orphaned homes and in desperate need of nurturing. St. Matia's is operated by the St. Martin Hope for the Needy Society which has a board of six Ugandan pastors and educators. The school society owns the land on which the buildings are located. Some of the existing facilities consist of a few wood and grass structures, with some classes meeting outside under the trees.
