Background:
Light Nursery and Primary School serves vulnerable children in Olocoi village and surrounding swampy areas. In 2003–2005, Olocoi was heavily affected by the LRA insurgency, as combatants hid in the swamps after wreaking havoc in villages. Today, the community is still struggling with poverty, trauma, and lack of infrastructure. Children from across the swamps cross into Olocoi daily for schooling, but inadequate facilities discourage attendance. Parents often keep children at home, citing poverty and distance. Currently, students study under temporary structures built with mats, and grass thatched roofs.
With the donation of four acres of land by area leaders, the community is committed to hosting a permanent school. The school will provide a safe, permanent, and child-friendly environment for at least 100 children initially, expanding to 300+ children as infrastructure grows.
