Background:
Pfunanane Academy is located on a small farm and was started in 1997 by the farmer's wife, a teacher, to provide an education for the poverty stricken children in the area. Initial enrolment was five students. Today enrolment stands at 200 and the school offers Kindergarten through Grade 7. Some of the students are orphans, or suffer from abuse and neglect. The school is located at the Pfunanane Ministries Centre which provides permanent shelter and support for several of the children. About one third of the students have sponsors who pay for their education and living costs. The other students pay school fees, when possible, which cover the school's operating expenses.
