Kalaya Training Centre
Ssese Islands, Uganda

Project Completed:

2011 - Construction of four classrooms   funded by Christian Schools in Western Canada

background:

Kalaya Training Centre is situated in the Kalangala District of Uganda in Bugala, one of Uganda’s Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria. The area has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in Uganda. The centre is operated by the Windows of Hope International Children’s Ministry in Uganda in conjunction with the Pentecostal churches of Uganda. Kalaya provides vocational training for girls from the local area and beyond who have been forced to drop out of school. Some of the girls have been rescued from the war-torn area in the north of the country where 20 years of war displaced many families resulting in many homeless children.

In 2011, Classrooms for Africa provided funds for the construction of permanent classrooms at the centre. Two of these classrooms provide learning space for vocational training for the girls and two are used for a preschool program for the many children in the area who had no other school to attend.
