Background:

The civil war that began in mid-December 2013 continues to affect millions of people in South Sudan. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated more with fighting which erupted again earlier last July 2016 between the government and opposition armed forces in Juba. More people are being forced to flee their homes. The economy is worsening every day, prices of basic commodities are skyrocketing and people have less money to buy even basic food items.

Based on NGO data, it is estimated that more 1.17 million children are out of school due to the continuous conflict and displacement. Bethel Sudanese Reformed Church, in the Mangateen area of Juba, is surrounded with many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who came from different areas across the country notably Bentiu, Pariang and Yei. There are hundreds of children without school. Thus, SRC has responded to the need by opening a school for these children.

The proposed four classroom block will be a semi-permanent structure, providing classroom space for 170 children in Kindergarten though Grade 3.
